April Music Musings

Music Packaging There’s something peculiar about the state of music today.  One thing that is lost in the advent of the single-song iTunes download, or even in the downloading of an entire CD’s worth of tunes, is the packaging.  Gone are the days when an artist could create a cohesive set of music, concept album, etc., include art work and liner notes that aided and expanded the painting of the musical picture.  Honestly, this is just a shame.  Today’s artist is relegated to selling themselves in a two or three minute snap-shot.  Sometimes it’s enough.  Sometimes it isn’t.  Packaging is still…

Walk Off The Earth – 5 People 1 Guitar!

Most of the time I’m looking for something that is original, new, and sometimes old and forgotten.   However, when this video was shared on Google+, it inspired me to take a look at this group.  Walk Off The Earth is a group of extreme talent, even if the bulk of their material is covers.  Take a look at this single guitar cover of Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know, And tell me if you think I’m wrong….

http://jamen.do/t/722469 I’ve said before, that Jamendo.com is a great source for creative commons licensed music, and prolific singer, songwriter, indie-rock musician, Andy Doran is a great example.  Andy’s various bands past and current, including Monkeyland, Cannula and the most recent Heifervescent, display his song craft with the utmost of imagery-even without a video to accompany them.   Check out this track, Dreamcatcher, from Cannula’s full length Neon Serenade, Available for free download under the terms of the creative commons licensing it was released under, at this link. Don’t stop there, however, do a search for Heifervescent on Jamendo or visit Andy’s web site for…

Give her a listen. She’s worthy of a purchase,…

The Swing Ninjas – Bei Mir Bist Du Schon

The Swing Ninjas are one of those bands that I discovered while perusing Jamendo.com and since then, I’ve listened to that free EP,Tears of the Tuba – The Difficult Second Album several times.  It’s so much fun!  Here’s a band, somewhat like Squirrel Nut Zippers in their love of fun, swing music.  They never take themselves too seriously, but the music never suffers from it. Here, the band covers Bei Mir Bist Du Schon from 1932.  My favorite track from…
