My Bubba & Mi – Wild & You

Back in 2011, I found My Bubba & Mi on Jamendo.com, and really liked their stuff.  With instruments that usually include only guitar and table harp-with an occasional banjo thrown in for good measure, and two-part harmonized vocals, My Bubba & Mi (Bubba is from Iceland and My is from Sweden) cast a spell with what they call “lullabies from the countryside.” Their tunes are generally slow and breezy, but Wild & You is an exception to that rule, with a…

Catherine Feeny – People in the Hole

Zombies.  Things that make you go “Hmmmm?” Catherine Feeny has a delightful breathy vocal delivery, similar in some ways to Suzanne Vega. Here on People in the Hole, Catherine explores what we don’t know about zombies and what zombies don’t know about us. It’s very tongue-in-cheek funny, and yet if you were listening to this song without the video, you would just be transfixed with Catherine’s vocals, rather than what’s going on here lyrically. Cheyenne Marie Mize – Wishing Well

Back in February, I posted the fine music of Cheyenne Marie Mize in the form of Friend. Just heard this song recently and it reminded me of how much I liked the music of Cheyenne. Say hello and welcome to the bluesy, nearly acapela rendering of Wishing Well, from her 2012 EP (vinyl only as far as I can tell) We Don’t Need. As always, check out Cheyenne Marie Mize on her web site. Yes, you’ll find the various social links there…

Dawes – A Little Bit Of Everything

I have absolutely fallen in love with this song and the story. Dawes may not think of themselves as  folk, but this is an absolutely great story.  The lyrics are poignant and timely in any era.  A Little Bit of Everything is about living fully, but there is so much more here; Life, loss, love, in short, A Little Bit of Everything.  The song is from the band’s 2011 release Nothing is Wrong. You can find out more information on Dawes by…

First Aid Kit – Emmylou

The breathy delivery of Swedish female folk sister duo  First Aid Kit  (Johanna and Klara Söderberg) is intoxicating and as with any drug, habit forming.  Here on Emmylou, they show their just-under-the-radar country styles, and it isn’t corny or cheap.  It is, however, beautiful.  These two can sing and harmonize perfectly.  Emmylou is from the January 2012 full-length The Lion’s Roar. You can find out more information on First Aid Kit, by visiting their web site. (yes, all the social links are there as well)…
