Vodka regulars will note that instrumental music of any kind is a rarity here. It’s not that I don’t like instrumental music, but for it to reach the blog, it really has to be accessible. Lydian Collective, Snarky Puppy, and The Fearless Flyers are just a few whom I believe have transcended the niche status. Enter Andrew Wasylyk, whose compositions are super-accessible and blend modern classical, ambient, and jazz to create a unique and wonderful soundscape. Awoke In The Early Days Of A Better World (seen/heard here) is from Wasylyk’s latest long-player, Fugitive Light And Themes Of Consolation (September 2020).

Where some composers find the palette of instrumental music a way to stretch the length of tracks into epic tales, Wasylyk uses brevity, standard composition lengths of 2 to 5 minutes mostly, that forces him to say in his music what he wants to say, without droning on. Each track on the long player is carefully created and beautifully performed. 

Wasylyk is the moniker for writer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Mitchell, who uses subtle influences of multiple genres to push his creations to a wider audience. While you may not want to dance to this music, you will find yourself transfixed by it. It’s a deep listening experience for the mind but could be a delicate background for a cocktail party as well, assuming we ever have those again.
