Letitia VanSant – Something Real

Something Real (seen/heard here) is from Letitia VanSant’s just released long-player, Circadian (February 2020), and it highlights an artist with enormous skill at creating music with a strong message. There are some amazing moments within these nine tracks.

Take the lead-off track, for instance, which is up for interpretation (is it a response to #MeToo, is it about not having the guts to speak out because of the voices in your head that deny you?)

“Too long you’ve lived inside my mind
You paid no rent, you stole my time
Now I’m taking back what’s mine
You can’t put my fire out”

Or what about the sheer hopelessness of Most Of Our Dreams Don’t Come True. Is that a shout-out to doing more and worrying less, or simply a testament of life as it is?

“Most of our dreams don’t come true
And after that what do you do
Seems the hardest part of letting go
Is having nothing left to hold”

That’s just a sampling of the often dark lyrics hiding among the beautifully constructed melodies. Letitia’s voice is so thrilling, you may lose track of what she is saying because you are mesmerized by the beauty. That’s the story throughout these nine tracks: beautiful music, beautiful vocals, and dark tales told so well.
