Georgia Black – Invisible Enemy

Vodka has always had a soft spot for vocal jazz, blues, and soul, particularly when such music uses modern-day influences to add texture-As long, that is, as those changes don’t compromise the integrity of the music. Enter Georgia Black, whose ode to the current pandemic and the superheroes who stay home to keep others safe, is a genre’ blending masterpiece.

Musically, Invisible Enemy (seen/heard here), borrows heavily from the aforementioned genres with a soulful delivery by Black. The orchestration fills, touches of trip-hop, a simple snare heartbeat, and full bass that hits you smack in the chest without overpowering Georgia’s vocals, are truly well-placed instrumental elements.

Lyrically, Georgia Black has a playful way with words, that comes at you soft, but nevertheless makes its point very well:

“Pray to the Gods to guide us from the war
Later be mindful of the battle floor
Invisible enemy
Another man down
The bodies are piling
Under the ground“

And then into the chorus, which makes no bones about what happens if you aren’t a hero doing the things that you need to do to keep yourself and others safe:

“And can they see?
To lock our doors is unity
The heroes stay inside to breath
The rest are losing mouths to feed”

Throughout, Georgia’s rich alto is perfectly suited for this type of music. Full-bodied and emotional, it demands to be heard. The song came out of a conversation with a co-worker at Georgia’s day job, talking about what used to constitute appropriate behavior. When you felt a little sick, you pushed forward and came to work anyway, because you felt that you needed to. Now, you stay home for the same reason. This is where we are now and where we will be for a while, it seems.
