Minhee Jones – 6 Feet

Minhee Jones is an artist worth following and monitoring. She makes interesting indie-pop that is accessible in a multi-generational and cross-genre way. Then there’s this single, 6 Feet, about Covid 19 and the effect that it has had on all of us, showing a collage of snapshots from around the world. It’s a sobering feeling to see the effects, both positive and negative, that the virus has had on people and places.

Lyrically, 6 Feet explores how individuals deal with the emotions of being in lock-down, such as this bit from the beautiful refrain:

“Potions make you feel OK, Get you through the day.
Potions make you feel alright, keep you through the night.”

Indeed, we are all finding new ways to deal with being alone or together in a space without our extended community of friends. It’s not impossible to keep in touch, we just have to try harder. Minhee taps into these emotions and asks the question, where will we be in the future?

This is one of the most powerful videos I’ve seen in some time, because of the visuals from all around the world and how they are interwoven into the lyrical and musical fabric of the song. Vocally, Minhee Jones is a strong contender. She sings beautifully and with conviction, making 6 Feet a welcome indication of what is to come from this young artist.

You can find a little bit of information on Minhee Jones (pronounced “Minnie”) by visiting her website. It has most of the information you require (social links, tour, photo, etc.), although it is missing a good bio. The promotional information that I received gives a little background, however, that I’m going to go ahead and quote so that you can get a feel for where Minhee Jones has come from as an artist:

“The half-Korean singer has taken an evolutional musical journey, from her classical piano training at the age of four, to her punk-rock bass playing days in highschool and eventually into her own songwriting exploration in university, leading her into the solo artist she is today. Jones had initially set out to succeed as an instrumentalist, before perfecting her vocals, confiding, “I felt it was my duty to be a female instrumentalist first and challenge stereotypes in a very male-dominated field.” (*)

Jones has a debut EP coming out soon, so watch for that in the near future. In the meantime, keep a lookout for more from Minhee Jones, and stay safe everyone!

Note: With Covid-19 still around, probably to be with us for some time, artists like Minhee Jones and many others need your purchases to keep their heads above water. If your situation allows it, consider purchasing more in these tough times. –Vodka
