Springtime from Erland and The Carnival’s March 2011 long-player, Nightingale, is both beautiful and eerie. Intimating darkness-even death, Erland and The Carnival highlight the darkness by the falling dirt and crawling cockroaches, blending this with a beautiful minor-key melody. Combining disparate pop and folk influences, Springtime, is a story complete with loss, longing and orchestral flare. While Erland and The Carnival have an extensive web site (social links included), there is little information about the band itself. Take a listen to this great…
Read MoreThere is something indescribable about the sound of Philadelphia, PA alterna-odd-folk duo, Norwegian Arms. Here on Tired Of Being Cold from their January 2013 long-player Wolf Like A Stray Dog, the band journeys to a far off land and falls into a bucket of magic mushrooms-or so it would seem. The music that came out after was accomplished, interesting, listenable, psychedelic-and odd. I don’t want you to get the wrong idea, this is “odd” in a very good way. On the album,…
Read MoreWhile perusing bandcamp.com, I came across the Canadian pop-rock of Half Moon Run and this delightful gem, Full Circle from the band’s March 2012 full-length, Dark Eyes. The melody is haunting and the rapid staccato vocal delivery is a great contrast to the instruments. Think of this music as a strange melding of 60’s folk and pop with today’s alternative and then combine a progressive rock element with that, and you will be close to the recipe for Half Moon Run….
Read MoreBack in August 2012, I posted the wonderful and awful Monster from Meg Myers EP, Daughter In The Choir. Meg has a way with interesting subjects, including the fun wordplay of Tennessee. Go there now! (Source: https://www.youtube.com/)
Read MoreAustralian alternative singer-songwriter-guitarist, Courtney Barnett, truly has some fun making music. Vocally, History Eraser, from her new EP due out in 2013, is nearly spoken word. Lyrically and musically, the grunge pop delivery is a bit psychedelic. While it may sound a bit odd (and it is a bit odd), it is also a formula that works very well for Ms. Barnett. You can find more about Courtney Barnett by visiting her web site, which includes purchase links for the single from i-Tunes…
