Dawes – A Little Bit Of Everything

I have absolutely fallen in love with this song and the story. Dawes may not think of themselves as  folk, but this is an absolutely great story.  The lyrics are poignant and timely in any era.  A Little Bit of Everything is about living fully, but there is so much more here; Life, loss, love, in short, A Little Bit of Everything.  The song is from the band’s 2011 release Nothing is Wrong. You can find out more information on Dawes by visiting…

Laura Gibson – La Grande

Oregon folk-pop aficionado, Laura Gibson, sings heartfelt songs with a hiccup-like delivery that draws attention to her voice (not unpleasing), the music, and the lyrics.  It’s a delivery that sells well.  Case in point is the title track of her January 2012 full-length, La Grande.  Laura’s voice sweeps and sways in broad strokes, leaving you haunted and singing along. Laura’s extensive website may keep you reading awhile. It includes a complete commentary on La Grande, photos, discography and social links (MySpace, Twitter,…

Bella Ruse – Complicated Rhythm

I first ran across the pop-folk duo, Bella Ruse, about a year ago on Jamendo.com where I fell in love with singer Kay Gillette’s quirky pop styling.  Jamendo, if you’ve been following along, is a source for music released under one of several Creative Commons licenses (free to download and listen to-some restrictions apply).   Complicated Rhythm is from their 2011, more traditionally released, full-length, Kuhzoo, which you can purchase from their web site.  You can also find them on MySpace and Facebook. (Source: https://www.youtube.com/)

Dicky Dahl – Black Hills Gold

Steeped in a mysterious story that lies just beneath the surface, Black Hills Gold from the band Dolorean’s 2011 release The Unfazed, insinuates a deep loss and in some ways, a new beginning.  Singer and guitarist, Al James, paints the story with broad strokes, rather than details, and lets the listener decide how best to interpret.  That said, the story is decidedly dark.  This video, captures the darkness in it’s black and white rendering.  As the story resolves in the end,…

Eva & Manu – Feet In The Water

If you are following this blog, you’ll recall that I posted a track from Eva & Manu back on January 23, 2012.  This folk-pop duo has been traveling around Europe, working for their room and board, and playing and writing music about their experiences and feelings as they go.  It’s a tremendous effort, by two very talented people.  Check out their Travel In Music blog, to learn more.   Posting this track now, is an effort by yours…
