The Aquaducks – Fuel The Funk

Note: Video no longer available. Jazz-infused R&B Funk can’t be all bad, and The Aquaducks prove that it ain’t bad at all!  Check out Fuel the Funk, and start jamming! The killer sax leads in as if you are in for a mellow jazz number, and then everything just kicks. Great fun and great music! You can obtain Fuel the Funk from any one of four sites for free (try bandcamp for starters), hopefully, the band will work up some more tunes in this vein and release a full length in the near future. Want more information? The band has no cohesive…

Snarky Puppy – Thing Of Gold

Thanks to Miss Melissa from 97.3 (the Wolf) in Grand Island, NE, for getting me started with Snarky Puppy. One amazing video later, a couple of repeat plays and I’d purchased the equally wonderful full-length CD/DVD combo Ground Up, which included Thing of Gold as the lead off track. Snarky Puppy isn’t so much a band as a collective of musically diverse musicians that are extremely accomplished in their craft.  The music is awe-inspiring, mesmerizing and leaves you strangely satisfied, yet wanting more….

Sophie Zelmani – Free Now

Singer-Songwriter Sophie Zelmani’s smokey voice, sounds like she could be on a small stage in a little piano bar around the corner from where you live.  Her songs are not immediately infectious, but they have a way of seeping into your inner core as you listen more.  Back to our lounge scenario, picture yourself sitting with your girlfriend or wife having a nice conversation over a few drinks.  The lights are low,  everyone is talking quietly, the singer is on-stage, and suddenly you…

The Swing Ninjas – Bei Mir Bist Du Schon

The Swing Ninjas are one of those bands that I discovered while perusing Jamendo.com and since then, I’ve listened to that free EP,Tears of the Tuba – The Difficult Second Album several times.  It’s so much fun!  Here’s a band, somewhat like Squirrel Nut Zippers in their love of fun, swing music.  They never take themselves too seriously, but the music never suffers from it. Here, the band covers Bei Mir Bist Du Schon from 1932.  My favorite track from…

Yusef Lateef – Nubian Lady

Noted for his blending of middle eastern sounds, soul and jazz, Yusef Lateef is at his grooviest, with Nubian Lady.  This track is by no-means new.  Released on the vinyl LP Gentle Giant back in the early 70’s, it translates perfectly into 2012, where electronic chill  meets ambient grooves.  I cannot find a source for the CD version of Gentle Giant, which had at one time been re-released by Rhino.  If you can find one, please send it to me, as I’d love…
