Nick Kingswell – There’s No Cure

Nick Kingswell’s indie-pop sound is unforced and melodious, and while it may not break much new ground musically, it’s a great example of pop done well. Beautifully sung with Nick’s rich tenor, There’s No Cure (heard here) explores regret, when love escapes you, not because you didn’t have the chance to make it work, but because you did and it didn’t work out.  “when you close your eyes I can’t help but think if I cross your mind but I’m the one who’s dreaming of our old love if I could ever bring…

Marissa Burwell – Scaredy Cat

Canadian singer-songwriter, indie-pop-rocker, Marissa Burwell, released the delightfully infectious single Scaredy Cat, back in July 2019. The single was a follow-up to her debut self-titled EP released in February 2019 and showcases an artist with genuine pop chops, that should be on someone’s major label horizon. That said, the near-sighted nature of the music industry almost guarantees that unless she is widely heard somewhere else, she will never make their radar screen. Making the presence of Marissa’s music known is left up to Vodka readers and others. Tout this artist’s…

VanWyck – Carolina’s Anatomy

VanWyck, the moniker used by singer-songwriter Christine Oele, has a road-weary vocal that lends itself perfectly to a folk song, and these are some magnificent folk songs indeed! Carolina’s Anatomy (seen/heard here) is from VanWyck’s latest long-player, Molten Rock (December 2019), a collection of twelve deep, observant prose with playful melodies. Think of VanWyck’s creations as detailed views of the ordinary and the extraordinary alike that take you on a deeply personal journey. VanWyck has been described as the female equivalent of Leonard Cohen, and I’ve got to say that there…

Lindsay White – Let Love Lead The Way

Lindsay White’s Let Love Lead The Way (seen/heard here) is an anthem and was written for the 2019 Women’s March San Diego, CA. Lindsay has appeared once before on Vodka about two years ago with the review and video for Lights Out.  Lindsay is a notable advocate for all things that make the human condition better. Whether it is her advocacy for women’s rights in the wake of the #metoo movement, grief support, support for LBGTQ or leading songwriting workshops for girls, White has staked out a…

Thom Hell – The Love Is Gone

Norwegian singer-songwriter Thom Hell was one of the first artists that Vodka reviewed, back before I was really writing reviews and just posting the videos, for the most part, of music that I liked. That video still stands out as both a beautiful track and one of the most innovative and thoughtful uses of technology in a video ever (my opinion). That video was posted back in January 2012 for the song Over You. The Love Is Gone (seen/heard here) is a single that was released…
