He’s My Brother She’s My Sister – The Same Old Ground

Update: The original video is gone. Here is an audio-only version that is still available:  He’s My Brother She’s My Sister is a melting pot of styles, grabbing the best from alt-folk, alt-country, and other ‘alts’ in the middle. Here on The Same Old Ground, from the band’s October 2012 long-player Nobody Dances In This Town, there are plenty of musical examples of the above.  There’s certainly a retro-vibe throughout Nobody Dances In This Town. There’s plenty to…

Abandon Kansas – You + Me + The Radio

In the heat of Summer, it’s nice to have a song that talks about escaping, which is something we all seem to want to do this time of year. Witchita, KS band Abandon Kansas’ offering to the season is You And Me And The Radio. There’s nothing very deep here, lyrically, but the words and music capture the feeling of a fun road trip. The band is made up of Jeremy Spring (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Brian Scheideman (drums) and Nick…

Secretary – The Only Ones

Update: The video and most other information on the band no longer exists. Secretary has a delicious pop flavor. Mournful, soaring vocal harmonies blend seamlessly with rightly mixed guitar, keyboards, drum, and bass, and here on The Only Ones, the finely written minor-key melody lends itself well to the lyric. There’s nothing necessarily outstandingly different here, but Secretary does it all very well. Now to the bad news: Secretary’s website is beautiful but difficult to read. The band bio, for instance, is so strung together, that all I can tell you positively is that the band is made up of Craig, Emma,…

The Primaveras – Your Love Lifts Me Higher

Let the R & B party begin! The Primavera’s have their party shoes always on, with a handful of singles and a long-player, all of which are available via i-Tunes. This is one of those times when the music speaks louder than anything I can say about this band. For instance, check out Your Love Lifts Me Higher, single from March 2013.  Check out the band’s web site and get ready to purchase their new long-player coming soon. (Source: https://www.youtube.com/)

Little Hurricane – Crocodile Tears

I keep coming back to the fabulous rocking duo, Little Hurricane. These two are bottled, energized, grunge story tellers. Each song is thick with emotional instrumentation but you can always hear and understand the lyric. There’s not much else to be said that hasn’t already been said about Little Hurricane in the reviews for Give Em Hell or Haunted Heart (all three of these tracks are from the great 2012 full-length, Homewrecker), but the music bears repeating. Here is the lead off-track…
