Old Man Canyon – Phantoms & Friends

Old Man Canyon is the work of one man, Vancouver’s Jett Pace. Phantoms & Friends is from the April 2013 five-song EP by the same name. The song is a builder, striking out with the chord progression that establishes the plodding melody which runs throughout the song, adding light percussion, and Jett’s eerie echoed vocal and then building on those elements. The end result is musically pleasing, and Jett’s vocals fit nicely within the melodic framework.

Now for a complaint or two. If you are headed over to Old Man Canyon’s web page, then you will have the only spot where everything is linked as it should be. The bandcamp.com site has no external links. Facebook links back to the web site only-which is better than not linking to anything (bandcamp.com). A reminder to all artists when marketing yourselves, don’t forget to link all of your content to everything else.

These are minor complaints, though, and should not detract you for one moment from exploring Old Man Canyon’s music and making a purchase. All five songs on the EP are worth the price of admission. Pleasing, sometimes, upbeat (Wiser) or mid-tempo full-on-harmony filled bits (The Road), these are well done alterna-indie-folk-pop gems. Take a listen and make a purchase!
