The Civil Wars – The One That Got Away

A year ago I would have been hard-pressed to foresee that The Civil Wars (Joy Williams and John Paul White) would be on the precipice of a breakup as a group but after a stormy tour that ended early, the writing may be on the wall. This ahead of the recently released self-titled second long player (August 2013). It’s hard to imagine that the duo responsible for setting the folk-pop world on it’s ear and creating a space for newcomers such as Flagship Romance and a host of others, might be at its end.

In some ways, it’s hard to listen to the plaintive up-front vocal from Joy Williams on The One That Got Away and not hear an underlying story that probably was not meant to be there. The One That Got Away could have been a story about missed opportunity for the success of The Civil Wars. That said, everything that is on paper now about the duo’s future is pure speculation. Let’s hope that the two can come to terms with their issues and continue to make great music together!
