RedFox – Better Now

RedFox is an indie-folk band making it’s second appearance on Vodka. Better Now (seen/heard here) is a song with a powerful lyric on the music industry from the perspective of front-woman, lead vocalist, and fiddle player, Daphnée Vandal. I reached out to the band and received this response regarding the lyric meaning from Vandal: “The more I performed, the more I started to notice aspects of the music industry that were bothering me; inconsistencies that were noticeable being one of few women in a lead performing role at many of the…

Minhee Jones – 6 Feet

Minhee Jones is an artist worth following and monitoring. She makes interesting indie-pop that is accessible in a multi-generational and cross-genre way. Then there’s this single, 6 Feet, about Covid 19 and the effect that it has had on all of us, showing a collage of snapshots from around the world. It’s a sobering feeling to see the effects, both positive and negative, that the virus has had on people and places.  Lyrically, 6 Feet explores how individuals deal with the emotions of being in lock-down, such as this bit…

Arielle Silver – Headlights

Two months ago, Vodka reviewed the awesome Americana-tinged folk-pop of Arielle Silver’s What Really Matters. The video for Headlights (seen/heard here),  Arielle’s latest single from her forthcoming long-player, A Thousand Tiny Torches, was just released to the public today, and it is another example of a great song and sentiment from this artist. This is very much like folk-pop circa the 1970′s and has the feel-good elements that were so prevalent back then.  Lyrically, Silver hits again, painting the feeling of what it’s like to look back on your life and…

Baby Rose – All To Myself

Vodka Austin Favorite: Baby Rose has a voice that will knock your socks off. She was due to play at the canceled SXSW event this year, and you can definitely hear why she would be a great performer to go see live. That rich soulful voice is riveting, full of natural vibrato and honest emotion. Accompanied here by what I like to call a muted broken piano sound, Baby Rose has plenty of space to evoke the raw emotion of All To Myself. This track comes from…

Breaky Boxes – Elder Ones

French folk-rockers Breaky Boxes, hit the world with a bang with their debut long-player, Resting Wall (March 2020), and Elder Ones (seen/heard here), is the lead-off track of this magnificent collection.  Throughout the 12 tracks on this long player, the harmonies are rock solid, the melodies are front and center, and the vocals are never buried beneath the mix. Breaky Boxes remind me of The Posies or Bad Religion, not because they have the same style of music, but because they have the same intensity and ability to plow…
