Jen Butterworth & Laura-Beth Salter – The Scottish Situation

Jenn and Laura-Beth have just released their first long-player, Bound (September 2016) of traditional and contemporary folk styling featuring their dueling well-paired vocals, guitar, and mandolin. Shine, heard and seen here is featured on that LP along with 10 other tracks. Their bandcamp.com site will only get you a couple of tracks to sample-including this one, but a scouring of Youtube.com will get you a few more tracks to give you a feel for the rest of the LP.  Shine is vaguely reminiscent of a track…

Lucas Jack – A Little More

You may remember self-proclaimed reformed lawyer Lucas Jack from clear back in 2013 and the video/review for Don’t Get Carried Away. Well, Lucas is back and adding more muscle to his great piano-rock with his new long-player, Make It Beautiful (August 2016), from which A Little More comes. It’s great stuff and rocks a little harder than the original LP. Before we continue, though, let’s talk just a bit about that earlier review. Lindsey Stirling – The Arena

As sometimes happens, a journey to research an artist for Vodka led to the discovery of this amazingly talented violinist, Lindsey Stirling, and the video for Crystallize and that led us to look up Lindsey and to find this video, The Arena, from a new long-player due out (by the time you read this, it should be out) August 19, 2016, entitled Brave Enough.  Vodka doesn’t very often dwell on instrumental music but there are exceptions, and we are happy to include Lindsey Stirling in the “exceptions” department.  Lindsey’s music is…

Hannah Gill – Austin

Hannah Gill & The Hours are ab-”soul”-utely top-notch! Austin (seen/heard here) just rocks! It’s full of Hannah Gill’s throaty Alto and a great band, which includes a horn section that just kicks ass! This is R&B Soul at its modern-day finest! If you aren’t blown away by Hannah Gill and company, then you are not on this planet. Holy Cow! Austin is the opening track for the 5-song EP, The Water (May 2016), which you should go out and buy immediately! Austin is no one-off hit either. The Water is…

Case/Lang/Veirs – Atomic Numbers

Case/Lang/Veirs as in Neko Case, K.D. Lang and Laura Veirs are representative of something that sometimes works and sometimes fails: supergroups. Thankfully, this is an example of when chemistry really works! As good as these three women are by themselves, they are perhaps orders of magnitude better together.  Their first album together is a testament to this on almost every level. Compositions are tight with understated harmonies and more than enough singable melodies to please.  At Vodka, we generally keep to the unknown or little-known bands, because we feel they don’t…
