Courtney Barnett – Write A List Of Things To Look Forward To

Vodka favorite rocker Courtney Barnett, has been releasing singles furiously for the past couple of months in preparation for her new long-player Things Take Time, Take Time due out November 12th, 2021. Enter Write A List Of Things To Look Forward To (seen/heard here). Vodka has been following Barnett since the beginning (2012) but I’ve been sidetracked with other things of late and haven’t been keeping up.  Though Courtney Barnett doesn’t fit neatly in the Vodka philosophy of shining a lite on the…

SLUGS – Super Sane

Full of jangle and mid-tempo alt-rock goodness, Slugs came out with Super Sane (seen/heard here) at the end of the year (December 2020).  If it feels alternately celebratory and depressing, that’s by design. The song was written during a time when one friend was killed in a motorcycle accident and another had just given birth to a new baby. It is against that counter-point that Super Sane plays, and it’s successful in every aspect! The four-piece is comprised of Marissa Longstreet (singer/songwriter/guitarist), Sarsten Noice (bass/vocals), Josh Beavers (lead guitar), and Dash Hutton…

Meg Myers – Running Up That Hill

It came as no surprise in January when Vodka favorite Meg Myers hit number 1 on the Billboard singles chart. What surprised me was that she made that number 1 chart-topper with a remake of Kate Bush’s 1985 hit Running Up That Hill (seen/heard here). Not that there’s anything wrong with that song. In fact, Myers’ interpretation of that song just reminds you what a great piece of music it actually is. The surprise comes that Myers’ own works haven’t made the same splash. They should! Vodka…

Hey Geronimo – Disconnect

Vodka had a flurry of Hey Geronimo tracks featured early on, starting with the funny and fun Why Don’t We Do Something clear back in August 2012. Over the last six years, the band has evolved musically and emotionally. Enter the hard look at our connected lives in Disconnect (seen/heard here) from what appears to be part of a theme from the new long-player, Content, due out by the time you read this. (September 2018) The band is still full of spot-on melodies and rhythms that keep the message…

The Heroic Enthusiasts – New York Made Me

A wall of rock and roll and layers of sound fail to obscure the vocals and the melody here on New York Made Me (seen/heard here) and on other tracks on the band’s debut self-titled long-player. There is something hauntingly familiar and yet very much original in the sound of The Heroic Enthusiasts. There are hints at David Bowie and maybe just a bit of the now ancient Cars in the sound, yet overall it is very much a sound unique to them. Each track is…
