The Devil Makes Three – Drunken Hearted Man

Vodka has never included a video from The Devil Makes Three before, most notably because the band makes very few videos that aren’t just audio-only tracks or full studio performances. But the new release from this band nearly demanded that we find a video somewhere so that we could add a review for the band’s new long-player, Chains Are Broken (August 2018). The Devil Makes Three is essentially a three-piece outfit, steeped in the folk storytelling tradition, but not at all beholden to a single style or genre’…

Hey Geronimo – Disconnect

Vodka had a flurry of Hey Geronimo tracks featured early on, starting with the funny and fun Why Don’t We Do Something clear back in August 2012. Over the last six years, the band has evolved musically and emotionally. Enter the hard look at our connected lives in Disconnect (seen/heard here) from what appears to be part of a theme from the new long-player, Content, due out by the time you read this. (September 2018) The band is still full of spot-on melodies and rhythms that keep the message from…

Luana Maso – Let The Rain

You may remember Luana Maso from Vodka’s review of the first single from her LP, Down The Rabbit Hole (April 2017),  Legends, that we posted about 10 months back. Well here is the second single off of that great LP, Let The Rain, another straight-up pop song done beautifully by the Italian songstress. As with Legend, Let The Rain is again about love and loss, and the search for balance within relationships. If Luana’s songs are truthfully about her own life experiences, it is terribly sad. One…

Mackenzie Shivers – Names

Mackenzie Shivers writes some very pretty music and lyrics and delivers a convincing performance. I would have only one small complaint: Mix the vocals just a little higher so that the lyrics are more audible. The vocals are only marginally under mixed, so it isn’t a big complaint. There’s plenty to like about Mackenzie Shivers and with only two EP’s currently available, plenty of time to tweak things up in the production department.   Musically, Shivers melody on Names (seen/heard here) from her first EP, Living In My Head (September 2016),…

Big Little Lions – Find Your Tribe

Five years ago and change, Vodka posted a wonderful one-off by singer/songwriter Helen Austin, called Perfect Girl. Just recently, I took a trip back through the archives, landed on that track, and wondered what happened to Helen. Thankfully, she is still out there, making music, as part of a duo now called Big Little Lions. Enter Find Your Tribe (seen/heard here), the lead-off single to that wonderful new collection of songs titled Alive And Well (February 2018). Paul Otten, a singer/songwriter in his own right, joins…
