JP – Losing My Mind

Australian drummer turned band front man, JP (a.k.a. John Milton),  and Losing My Mind from the debut four-song EP, Part 1 (November 2015) is a study in bass-driven, melodic, genre blending styles. This rehearsal video, isn’t necessarily studio quality in all respects, but it certainly gives you a hint at what the EP sounds like. If you have any doubt, click over to the bandcamp.com link and listen.  JP’s vocals are unpretentious and perfect for sharing a lyric. He has a pleasing tenor…

Birdeatsbaby – Spiders

I don’t now exactly how to categorize Birdeatsbaby. They are an amalgam of pop, rock, alternative that is very intriguing. Their new July 2014 long-player, The Bullet Within,  is full of sweet yet dark tales. Sometimes they are mid-tempo rockers (Enemies Like Me) or slow tempo pop (Drinking in the Day, Ghosts). These tunes are full of strings and great vocals and harmonies. Like Spiders (video), nearly every tune is a minor key vignette full of darkness and beauty.  You can find more information on Birdeatsbaby…

Eliza Rickman – Start With Goodbye, Stop With Hello

Eliza Rickman’s provocative new video Start With Goodbye, Stop With Hello, from her 2012 long player, O You Sinners, is both dark and fun. It is a look into the complexities of ms. Rickman as well. Like her voice, her music and message are full-ranged as well. As the video for Start With Goodbye, Stop With Hello hints,…

Odd Owl – The Way Home

Odd Owl makes delightfully diverse pop gems that co-opt different styles from 80’s pop to today. It makes for an interesting blend. Take The Way Home which is a revamped version of the original song that appeared on the 2010 EP, Fly By Night, (and will re-appear in its current form on the band’s forthcoming EP, The Call, later this year) for instance. Fun jangely uke and keyboards blend with guitar and drums in a way that will have your body…

Old Man Canyon – Phantoms & Friends

Old Man Canyon is the work of one man, Vancouver’s Jett Pace. Phantoms & Friends is from the April 2013 five-song EP by the same name. The song is a builder, striking out with the chord progression that establishes the plodding melody which runs throughout the song, adding light percussion, and Jett’s eerie echoed vocal and then building on those elements. The end result is musically pleasing, and Jett’s vocals fit nicely within the melodic framework. Now for a complaint or…
