The Heroic Enthusiasts – New York Made Me

A wall of rock and roll and layers of sound fail to obscure the vocals and the melody here on New York Made Me (seen/heard here) and on other tracks on the band’s debut self-titled long-player. There is something hauntingly familiar and yet very much original in the sound of The Heroic Enthusiasts. There are hints at David Bowie and maybe just a bit of the now ancient Cars in the sound, yet overall it is very much a sound unique to them. Each track is a…

Dropkick – Slow Down

Remember Dropkick?  They appeared on Vodka a couple of years ago with Style from the EP of the same name. Since that time, the boys in the band have been busy, releasing Homeward in 2014, which contained Style, a compilation long-player encompassing some of the band’s work from 2001-2008 called Good Vibes Vol. 1, and now (by the time you read this or very soon after) a new long-player, Balance The Light, from which Slow Down comes. The band seems to have settled on a style that is a bit retro…

My Fair Fiend – Making Monsters

The current fascination with all things zombie is wearing a bit thin with me, but none the less I absolutely love the second long-player from minor-key alt-rockers My Fair Fiend, Making Monsters (October 2015).  Those who have been following along here for a while will remember the wonderful self-titled debut long-player and review for Murder A Dream posted here a little over two years ago. Well, nothing has changed except perhaps some additional polish and song-craft. Still focused on the morose, Callie (Moore) Crofts and company have a…

Birdeatsbaby – Spiders

I don’t now exactly how to categorize Birdeatsbaby. They are an amalgam of pop, rock, alternative that is very intriguing. Their new July 2014 long-player, The Bullet Within,  is full of sweet yet dark tales. Sometimes they are mid-tempo rockers (Enemies Like Me) or slow tempo pop (Drinking in the Day, Ghosts). These tunes are full of strings and great vocals and harmonies. Like Spiders (video), nearly every tune is a minor key vignette full of darkness and beauty.  You can find more information on…

Windings – This Is A Conversation

There’s something unusual and delightful in the sound created by Irish alterna-odd-rockers, Windings. It’s full of twists and turns, key shifts, textural brightening and softening and yet has great fluidity. Here on This Is A Conversation from the band’s October 2012 long-player I Am Not The Crow, you get all of those qualities and more. Former head banging rocker Steve Ryan originally started Windings as a solo project in one-man-band fashion while taking a break from the band Givemeakick back around 2004. Fast…
